“Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.” ― Confucius And so, in mid-October of this past year, my wife Anne and I set off for the Far East—for the distant Country of China—7,000 miles and 18 hours away—with a full heart, but one that was open to new experiences and new people. Including our travel time on Cathay Pacific, our trip with Tauck Tours was 18 days—from Beijing to Xian to Chengdu to Guilin to Shanghai to Hong Kong. We learned so much, about the warm and friendly Chinese people, its autocratic Communist government and its current politics, the ancient and more recent history of China, its modern infrastructure, its science and technology, its education, its awe-inspiring architecture, its incredibly beautiful natural landscapes, the savory Chinese cuisine—its color, its aroma, its taste—the music of China, its culture, entertainment, sports. It was a lifetime of education squeezed into just over two weeks. Though our experiences, we learned that the Chinese people are good, kind, hospitable people. They reach out to make friends, even encouraging their little children to reach out and make friends, as well, with the strange-looking foreigner with the white mustache and Indiana Jones hat. They know that just as Americans enjoy visiting and learning about China, so too do residents from China enjoy visiting and learning about the United States. After all, we engage in trading together; and we also study scientific, technological, and medical advances in each other’s country. We often share cultural, athletic, and entertainment pursuits, as well. Although we rightfully value our Democratic values and the American way of life, there is still a great deal that we can learn from one another.
